More about Nicole
I am an award-winning author and have a passion for the environment and animal rights. My Graduate Diploma in professional writing from the University of Canberra helped create the foundations for three successful picture books to date. My current studies towards a Masters in Environmental Management is providing me a mountain of ideas for future books to help the planet and the animals we share it with.
My first book, Ella, is about a little elephant who works the streets with her keeper (mahout). Her heart is broken and she desperately wants to find her mum. After visiting Thailand and meeting elephants who had suffered terribly throughout their lives, I knew the first book had to tell their story.
My second book Billie takes the reader on a journey with Billie the dolphin as she searches to find the biggest wave, only to encounter ocean junk, pollution, driftnets, dolphins in captivity and much more.
My latest book Jelly Boy (Walker Books Australia) was released in February 2020. It tells the story of a jellyfish who falls in love with a plastic bag.
In award news, in February 2021, Jelly-Boy was listed as a Notable book in the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Awards and in November 2020, Jelly-Boy won the Conservation Awareness for Children category of the Whitley Awards, bestowed by the Zoological Society of NSW. And it’s not all about Jelly-Boy − in 2019, Billie won the ACT Writing an Publishing Award in the children’s category.
I was also honoured to have several picture book and chapter book manuscripts being recognised as highly commended in the CYA competition in both 2019 and 2020. Let’s hope these manuscripts eventually become books as well.
In 2018 I was awarded a scholarship to attend the 2018 SCBWI winter conference in February 2018. The scholarship was awarded to one author and one illustrator worldwide.
I look forward to you joining me on my continuing journey.
